I can add text fine, and I can also add and rotate images. But how would I add a rotated text? I want to create a diagram and want to add text to the y-axis at 90 degree rotation.

You can do this from 2 places. If the text box is big enough it will have a rotation circle in the middle and you can spin it around.
If it's a small text box just click on the properties button of that text element in the timeline and rotation is an option you can amend there
