This article will show you how to view and use the different options that are available from the timeline
Top tip: Watch our Using the timeline in VideoScribe browser tutorial
Every element added to your project (such as images and text elements) will be displayed along the timeline at the bottom of the screen. There are two timeline options you can choose from depending on your own preferences and needs:
Simple timeline
The simple timeline is the default view and displays your elements as a series of tiles:
- The timeline tiles are displayed in the order the elements will be animated in your video - the numbers on the tiles indicate the element's position
- Timings for each element are displayed underneath the tile
- You can drag and drop the tiles along the timeline to change their order
- Select a timeline tile to edit the element's settings in the right-hand panel
Advanced timeline
The advanced timeline lets you quickly adjust your element’s timings. You can visually align elements with specific parts of your audio tracks, such as the start of a new sentence, for a seamless presentation.
To access the advanced timeline, toggle the timeline switch to ‘Advanced’:
- Each row in the timeline represents a single element, with the first element at the bottom
- Each row includes a thumbnail followed by a series of icons representing each of the element's animation stages - for example the entrance animation
- Hovering over each icon will display more information about that animation stage
- In the top left corner of the advanced timeline you will see the current scene name
- Audio tracks are displayed at the bottom of the timeline as a waveform
-
Scene audio appears within the blue scene box, with its waveform highlighted in yellow
-
Any audio outside this box is considered project audio and plays across the entire project
-
Please note: The thumbnail and animation stage icons may not be visible if the timings are too short. You can still hover over the element to see more details. Or you can select the element to see all this information in the right-hand panel under the 'Animation' tab.
Using the advanced timeline
- To reorder elements, select the element row and drag it up or down to the desired position
- To adjust the animation times, drag the handles between the animation stages
- To move to your next scene, scroll right in the advanced timeline and select the greyed-out scene
Advanced timeline controls
There are various controls surrounding the advanced timeline to adjust to your liking:
Arrow icons - use these to jump to the beginning or the end of the timeline
-
Expand icon - use this to reset to the default view
- Top slider - use the ‘+’ and ‘-’ sliders to zoom in and out
- Left slider - use the ‘+’ and ‘-’ sliders to adjust the height of the rows
- Scrollbars - use the bottom and right scrollbars to scroll through your timeline
