when you make your two points, if you just "click and release", then you will get two anchor points with no handles and you will see the symptom you described.
if you "click and drag" the pen tool when you make each point then you get get anchor points with handles and your line will draw more smoothly. Adding more points to your line will also help.

Thanks, that works - but I am still at a loss as to why VS would interpret any two-point stroke as anything but motion.
When I'm trying to get the hand to draw a line of 2 points only (start/end) -
there's no motion. The hand simply appears on point 1, pauses there, then jumps to point 2.
The expected motion is that the hand would start at point A, go to Point B faster or slower according to the animation duration.
