I applied the 4-step technique you described above. If I am not wrong, the "ellipse" technique introduces some latency in the drawing by videoscribe (despite the the "no stroke" property).
1) Am I right ?
2) If I am right, is there a way to avoid this latency ?

I forgot to reduce the pause and transition durations to zero. There is indeed no more delay now.
I find an annoying drawback to this hack is that elements overlap elements with the hidden bounding box cannot be selected rotated or scaled from the artboard. Even if the bounding boxed elements are "before" the target image in the timeline the bounding box interferes with normal editing. Workaround is to "hide" the offending elements.
I may be wrong. VideoScribe just seems to have a mind of its own tonight. I think it is just bugs I'm dealing with.
