Save scribe to local pc ALWAYS

  • I am running a local instance of VideoScribe 3.0.2 Windows (at least that's what I was told when we purchased the license). When I go to save the scribe, it asks "Folder" but I have no idea where this folder resides. I want to save it to my pc by default.

There's 2 icons for Export and Download (to my pc??) and do I have to export every time? The other says "save to my Sparkol cloud". What if I don't select either icon, where does it save it? I don't want it EVER in the cloud. I have proprietary products I work on and want to save my files locally ONLY. Why can't I set that as the default saving location?

    Please help.

  • You're in luck.
Videoscribe does save your  work to your local pc by default. It saves somewhere in your appdata folder in a format that is not easily found or opened in any way other than through the videoscribe program.

If you want to save in a location of your choice. then click the floppy disk icon to save a standalone copy of your work as a .scribe file in a location of your choice:

  • If you look at my screenshot above, you'll see that I don't have this "base folder" option. My version 3.0.2 is run locally on my pc. IF I create a new folder, I don't see where it's saving, nor can I change where it's saving to.

  • The "base folder" and any other local saving folders that you create in videoscribe are not actual windows folders that you can find in windows explorer. They are part of a virtual filing system accessible only in videoscribe that allows you to sort your work if you wish.

In your screenshot, you are already in the base folder, so there is no link to take you to the base folder.

  • 1. "base folder"....."not actual windows folders that you can find".

Why the heck not? This is not the typical function of saving a file. Why can't I open it from windows explorer from a folder I created for a particular project, not some ambiguous place hidden from me.

    2. "virtual filing system"

Again, Why the heck not?  I need to create folders in an appropriate place on my computer and access it however I want. What's with this "virtual filing system"? Who does that? EVERY OTHER application I use allows me to save to my computer WHERE I WANT. I have other items in the folder on my computer that I'd like to keep together with the video per project, per product, per whatever I want.

    3. in your screenshot" how do you or I know I'm in the base folder and where is this "base folder".

    4. Are you saying that the only way for me to save it where I want so I can find it is to EXPORT???????

Otherwise I will never find my scribe file locally on my computer, ever??

  • (oh, you are using version 3 and I'm still using version two so the icon is the one you circled instead of the floppy disk icon in the screenshot I provided.)

    1) You could ask customer support if you want to know the official answer for that.
As I mentioned in my first response, if you want the file to be saved somewhere that you can easily find it, copy it, paste it delete it etc, then save it as a .scribe file in a location of your choice on your hard drive.

    2) It is very easy to save your project wherever you want as a .scribe file.

    3) I guess they could add a label that lets you know that you are now saving your work locally on your computer in the default location. There is a suggestions forum if you want to make that suggestion.

    4) Yes, I believe the only way to export your project as a.scribe file to a location of your choice is to click the export icon. If you would like more than one way to do that you could make a suggestion thread in the suggestions forum.

  • I was hoping someone in customer support with expertise on version 3.x would actually address my question here.

The key term here is that you have to EXPORT the scribe to save it to your own computer. There's no way to designate that you want to save it locally as the default. In any case, SAVING is one thing, EXPORTING  is what you want to do if you want to save it locally. Otherwise, SAVING just saves it someplace mysterious that we can't know about apparently.

  • Customer support comments here in the users forum pretty often, but you could  raise a ticket if you would like to consult customer support directly. You could also see if there is already a suggestion thread about this topic, and, if not, make one.

Its a reasonable suggestion, I think, because most well established programs do automatically prompt you to choose a save location for your work files. In general, I think videoscribe should embrace the standard windows/mac file browsing and saving options more.

Until that happens, its very easy to click that export icon and save your work wherever you want it. Save frequently and backup your work, regardless of what program you are using!

  • Hi Sophia

The location of your scribe data and associated files and directories that VideoScribe uses to present your projects to you and make them available in the software is a common location that many applications use. On a Windows computer the location is C:\Users\[usersprofilename]\AppData\Roaming in a folder named VideoScribeDesktop . On a Mac it is \Macintosh HD\Users\[your username]\Library\Application Support\VideoScribeDesktop. (The 'Roaming' and 'Application Support' folders will also contain folders related to other applications that you have installed on your computer).

We are not trying to hide these files or prevent your access to them for any reason, it is just that any backing up, saving and editing of your scribes can be done within the application and access to the files in this location is not needed for normal usage of the software.

The file extensions of the data in this folder are different from any file types you can obtain from the user interface of VideoScribe so that when searching for a file you have exported, for example, duplicates are not returned and the potential for users to move or delete these files (from the wrong location) is eliminated, as this can lead to data loss and issues with using the software in a normal way. The files and folders in this location are for the application to read and manipulate following user interactions with the VideoScribe user interface, they are not intended to be manipulated by the user directly and there is no reason why most users would need to.

As I have said, the files in this location are for the application to access and manipulate following user interactions from within the application and should not be edited directly if you do not want to lose data or functionality within the software. But if you feel the need to have access to, or know the location of those directories and files, that is fine.

One thing I should add about saving/exporting is that you need to save a copy of the scribe (locally) in VideoScribe using the tick icon before you export the scribe as a .scribe file. Only the last locally saved (in VideoScribe) version of the scribe is exported.

  • Hi Matthew, thanks for your explanation of the local storage. I bought a new computer, is there a way to move all my local scribes to the new computer other than having to export each one and import to new computer? I have a lot of local scribes, this will take a long time if I had to do one by one?

  • I think this will work:

(note: this procedure will overwrite or erase any scribe that are already on your new computer)

    1) Install the same version of videoscribe on your new computer, that you have on the old computer

    2) Find the VideoScribeDesktop folder in your appdata folder and copy it to the same location on the new computer. It will overwrite the newly created folder with the same name.

Run videoscribe to confirm your projects are all there.

Its probably a good idea to save a copy of every project to the cloud folder too, since it is a free backup option for your work.
